Activate Card
This workflow shows how to activate a smart card in the system.
Goal
The goal of this workflow is to activate an existing smart card so it can be used for access.
Activating a card is typically done when a request has been approved and a card has been printed to use for access to a specific resource.
Who can perform this workflow
This workflow is restricted, and you must have the correct permissions to complete it.
To perform this workflow, you must either: - Be a system administrator - Have the required permissions to manage smart cards or credentials
Preconditions
- The smart card must already exist in the system
- The smart card must be in Not active yet or Not activated state before activation is allowed
- You must have the required permissions to manage the card

Workflow steps
There are multiple ways to activate cards.
Method 1
- Navigate to the organization units & persons page
- Find the relevant person in the node tree
- Navigate to the credentials section
- Find the relevant card in the table and start the workflow by clicking on the card
- Press the button that says activate
- Confirm that the card has been activated
Method 2
- Navigate to the devices page
- Press on the node in the tree that is named Card Printing
- Navigate to the Ready to activate section
- Find the relevant card in the table and start the workflow by clicking on the card
- Press the button that says activate
- Confirm that the card has been activated
Method 3 - Multiple cards
- Navigate to the devices page
- Press on the node in the tree that is named Card Printing
- Navigate to the Ready to activate section
- Find the relevant cards in the table and start the workflow by clicking in the checkbox to the left on the row
- Press the button that says activate cards
- Confirm that the cards has been activated
Result
- The smart card(s) is marked as active in the system
- The card(s) can be used for access
- Any access checks reflect the active state
- A notification is shown to confirm the action
Failure cases and validation
- Missing permissions
- The card is already active or in an invalid state
- Network errors
- Backend or server errors
